What I'm working on - Rehnquist Deck

Another Supreme Court deck.  This time William Rehnquist gets the Pushead treatment.

The board I went with was the Zorlac Double Cut (ignore the shape above) as drawn by Pushead.  Rehnquist really needed to be put through the skull, monster zombie mill.  One of the things I always loved about this deck was the great scary shrunken head combined with the 70s looking Zorlac logo.  It really encompassed what skateboarding was about in the 80s.

What I'm working on - The O'Conner Deck

Here's another skateboard deck based on the 1986 Supreme Court.  I figure Sandra Day O'Conner would deserve one of the coolest decks.

So I went with the 1985 Vision, Mark Gonzales deck designed by Andy Takakjian.  I think there's still a bit too much pink in the hair but it's working.

What I'm Working On - Powell Deck

It's odd when an idea comes to you that makes no sense but makes perfect sense.  That's what happened when I started working on a set of 1980s skateboard decks based on the 1986 Supreme Court.

Here's the first one Justice Lewis Powell, appointed by Nixon and served on the Supreme Court from 1972-1987.

It's in the style of the 1986 Tracker, Dan Wilkes deck, illustrated by Garry S. Davis.

Powell had a bit of a reptilian feel to him.

My drawing hand is way out of practice and I don't feel like I'm doing the original justice.  Then again it's for Powell, who led us down the path to "corporations are people" and "money is speech"- so maybe I'm being too flattering.

What I'm working on - bathrooms and floors

Recently I've started to redo our house.  Half out of necessity and half as art practice.  I haven't figure out how to contextualize it yet but there's something there.

The boys bathroom was gross but all it really needed was a can of red paint, a new light fixture and some stickers.

What started out as the race car bathroom took a turn when I started framing some drawings of artists I'd been doing.  It's been kind of therapeutic to sit down and imagine what sort of Ed Roth creation Donald Judd or Richard Serra would drive.

Now all I need to do is figure out the floor.  I'm leaning toward that gray bumpy industrial stuff but cork would probably look better.

T-shirt Mania

Okay I haven't posted in a while.  Basically, I've been printing t-shirts, printing prints, dealing with the garage sale, ordering printing, printing Christmas cards and packing perks up.  Today I'll show off the shirts.

I have a pretty simple set up using a photo emulsion technique and do all my t-shirts in my garage (I should really do a walk through some time).  It's relatively easy and I've practiced enough I can really crank stuff out.  The thing I like about it is that there are mistakes and the image can be out of register thus a bit unique.  Something you don't see in modern t-shirts.

The front of the shirt has the fighting zebra on the pocket (I didn't get a good picture of it).

The back is Car 23 at Rowher flats.  

and "Tire Buyers" get a special tire enhanced shirt.

What I'm Working On - testing the car

Last weekend was a work out for me and Car 23.  Rhonda - pilot, mba, recent superbike school graduate and dear friend agreed to be my co-driver.  She has a perfect balance of daring and sanity.  I was comfortable being the passenger as she bombed down mountain roads and she also put up with my driving.

Sunday was spent at Rowher Flats.  This time we really gave the car a work out and it easily handled anything we threw at it.  I loves to climb and doesn’t seemed to be fazed by any obstacle in front of it.  It’s feels like it wants to drive itself.

There are some issues.  Car 23 bottoms out and the tires rub against the body work.  So, there is definitely work to be done on the suspension.  Also, trying to figure out how to fit a fuel cell, spare tires and any other equipment in the back is a challenge..  Oh and remembering to tie things down - collecting tools and gas cans off the trail isn’t that fun.

I am thrilled to be at 27% funded this early in the United States Artists Project and now matching funds are available.  So, tell your friends. Thank you everyone who has supported Car 23 so far.

What I'm working on - Dj Rig

For my book release I created a Dj set up.  It had some technical problems (the lower double turntable grumbled) but over all it worked nicely and the Recerd Player Tordimint was fun.

Next time I need to spend a bit more time setting it up.

What I'm up to - BOOK RELEASE!

We're having a little kick off party for my Front 40 Press book at Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects.  The book is really nice with an excellent essay by Doug Harvey and an interview with Veronica Fernandez (where I actually sound articulatet!).  The release should be fun.  I'm packing up the Dj rig and it looks like its going to be a full blown "Recerd Player Tornimint."

I've been continuing along with the folded silk screened canvas pieces.  I like this one but it's made me realize I'm moving in the wrong direction.

Catching up...

Nearly a month has flown by since my last post.  I really don't know what I've been doing with my life.  I've said that people stop blogging when their life gets too interesting but that's not the case with me.  Things have been the same.

Anyway here's a run down on what's been going on.

I gave a lecture at Otis

It was good, although I felt a bit "off."  It was mainly undergraduates and I wasn't quite prepared for that.  It's a  different lecture than one for graduates or a general audience.  It was a good lecture in the end but it could've been better.  On the plus side, I got to do some record shopping that day.


We went on a Candy Hike

This time we made it all the way up to the waterfalls (without much convincing).  I'm starting to be the one who has to keep up.


I went to a wedding in Texas.

My nephew got married.  It was fun and really good to see the family


I think I resolved Diehard Champion.

It needs different hardware but it works.
